Whispers from the Camino—The Pilgrim Song

I woke up ready to enjoy this one full day in Santiago with no other agenda than connecting with and experiencing the people and the electric energy of the place. Pilgrim friends had asked me to sing the little song that took the whole walk to write. We had set a time for 11:00 a.m. on an upper plaza for anyone who wanted to join me. I definitely wanted to get to the Pilgrim Mass at some point in the day to witness the swinging of the Botafumeiro (video link), a large incense that burner that requires eight people to manage the ropes as it is swung high above pilgrims attending the Mass.

It was also my sister’s 62nd birthday. I sent her a video birthday greeting singing “Happy Birthday” with the Cathedral in the background. While this was journey I needed to take on my own staying connected to the people in my life was deeply important. Every night I posted pictures on Facebook and took time at breakfast to read the comments and blessings of my friends. Today it was a rich privilege to sing Happy Birthday to my little sis with the Cathedral towering over me.

I end this “Whispers from the Camino” with the words and the link to my “pilgrim song.” In many ways it captures so much of what I experienced on the Camino. Thank you for taking this “little walk” with me.

Verse 1

Hello, my friends, here’s my song

I’ll ask you to sing along

It’s a tune of the pilgrim path.

We’ve shared a lot through day and night

Blisters, snorers, our common plight

And still we walk on.

Chorus X 2

I will be your pilgrim friend

Believe in you to the end

And see you on the other side.

Verse 2

Italian, French, and Spanish too

We are a crazy mixed up stew

Walking the same long path.

Can you speak the native tongue?

It’s not so easy for everyone

But euros—gets the job done.

Chorus X 2

I will be your pilgrim friend

Believe in you to the end

And see you on the other side.

Instrumental Bridge

Verse 3

We are all homeward bound

Feeling lost until we’re found

By the magic of the Camino Way

Body, mind and spirit too

We’ll be transformed through and through

By the earth beneath our feet.

Chorus X 2

I will be your pilgrim friend

Believe in you to the end

And see you on the other side.

Verse 4

What brought you here and why you come?

Don’t tell me that it’s just for fun

There’s a story behind those tears.

Life is hard and life is good

Not everything is understood

Of the mystery of this pilgrim path.

Chorus X 2

I will be your pilgrim friend

Believe in you to the end

And see you on the other side.
