“For you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

Genesis 3: 19 from the Hebrew Scriptures

These are the words that are often spoken by the pastor or officiant during an Ash Wednesday service on the first day of Lent in the Christian tradition. It is a reminder of the temporal nature of our lives and the divine invitation to reflect the beauty and glory of God every day from the day we are formed from the earth to the day we return to the earth.

“Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”
